After arriving on the island of the Cyclops (Sicily) Ulysses deceived the Cyclops Polyphemus (son of Poseidon) drunk with excellent wine and blinded him in his sleep.
Once Ulysses and his companions escaped, Polyphemus asked his father to take revenge for him by unleashing tidal waves and earthquakes with the intent of not returning Ulysses home to his wife Penelope.
